Bury Council carbon reduction

Decarbonisation project
Location:
Bury, Greater Manchester
Value:
£350k
Client:
Bury Council

This project involved the installation of carbon reduction measures across seven Bury Metropolitan Borough Council properties including Bury Market, The Met, Bury Adult Education Centre, New Kershaw Centre, Ramsbottom Civic Hall, Swimming Pool and Library.

Bury Council secured funding from the government’s Public Sector Carbon Reduction Fund to support the project. The scope of the works involved the installation of various carbon reduction measures including solar photovoltaic panels, double-glazed UPVC window and door systems and improved building insulation.

Long lead times on the solar PV panels, invertors, and other specialist equipment meant that early ordering was essential in facilitating a successful delivery of this scheme. Interface between Warden and Electricity Northwest was carefully managed throughout the scheme, and delays for the safe removal of asbestos were mitigated within the schedule, to ensure that the client’s programme could be successfully achieved.

Noise management surveys were conducted in all buildings and work scheduled for quieter periods, or out of hours, alongside careful, detailed, project management throughout, to ensure minimal disruption.

As part of our social value approach to the project local employment opportunities were created and apprentice weeks committed to the scheme. Carbon emissions attributable to the scheme were minimised by utilising a local supply chain and labour with 98% of the waste created by the scheme diverted from landfill.
