North West construction company, Warden Construction, has begun an £1.15 million refurbishment of a Manchester residential scheme that will provide 17 self-contained apartments for homeless families.
The project, located at Greenwood Road in Wythenshawe and on behalf of Manchester City Council, is part of a wider programme to increase the supply of quality, publicly owned temporary accommodation and will help to reduce the need to place families outside the Manchester area.
Seventeen of the building’s eighteen existing one-bedroom apartments will be refurbished as temporary accommodation, while the remaining ground-floor apartment will be converted into facilities for an on-site accommodation team.
Scheduled for completion in Spring 2027, each apartment will receive a new kitchen and bathroom. Two shared laundry rooms will also be created.
The works undertaken will retain the building’s existing configuration wherever possible, minimising the need for structural intervention. The three-storey refurbishment will include a full electrical rewire, new internal, external and emergency lighting, upgraded heating, new fire doors and new fire and intruder alarm systems.
External works include replacing fencing, improving drainage and garden landscaping.
Ian Williams, managing director of Warden, said: “The Greenwood Road project will give the existing building a new purpose and, most importantly, will provide safe, good-quality accommodation for homeless families in South Manchester.
“It’s another example of our growing expertise in specialist residential projects. We’re passionate about working with clients such as Manchester City Council to deliver projects that make good use of existing buildings and have a real impact on people’s lives.”
We have previously delivered projects for Manchester City Council including the Gorton Public Realm improvement scheme, which received the Delivering Value Award at the 2026 North West Regional Construction Awards.
We also have a specialist residential team that works in partnership with local authorities, registered housing providers and developers on projects including respite care, specialist adult care, student accommodation and residential schemes.
